Saturno Buttò 1957 | Italian surrealist painter

I was born in 1957 in Portogruaro, Venice. I am a painter and I create portraits. I always went for some amusement through painting. Still I uphold my flayr for portraits, for I enjoy so much creating and looking at them, then. I love to mix things…Sacred and profane for example. It is quite normal for me to put purely erotic situations together with examples of devotional observance, like praying figures, misycs or martyrs. I always enjoyed exploring the potential of mind and body, with a special interest in the “at the most” situations: figures able to shock while saving their power of seduction, in a kind of mix which makes you share, even at home, the performance of deep-rooted taboos. I owe a lot to my school education, especially to my High school of Arts and, then, to the Fine Arts Academy in Venice. Saturno is my Christian name. In the ancient septenarius, i. e. the set of the visible planets including the sun, Saturn’s symbol is depicted by the cross of the elements dominating a moon crescent. In my works I almost always put his monogram aside the signature.

Pitre has been a significant influence in the art world for over thirty years, and carries the distinction of being one of the most widely published artists in modern history. One of John Pitre's best known paintings is A New Dawn, a 1965 work which shows a modern human reduced to the status of a caveman in the midst of smoldering urban ruins. This painting, in the weeks after the September 11, 2001 attacks more than thirty five years later, was seen by some as a foreshadowing of what came to be known as the Ground Zero of those events. In 2004, the owner of the original painting, which was valued in 1997 at $1.7 million, offered A New Dawn in trade for a £1 million house on the London real estate market.

Max Ernst 1891-1976 | Pioneer of the Dada art and Surrealism

Max Ernst French Dadaist Surrealist Painter
Max Ernst was a german painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet. A prolific artist, Ernst was one of the primary pioneers of the Dada movement and Surrealism. Ernst was born in Brühl, near Cologne, the third of nine children of a middle-class Catholic family. His father Philipp Ernst was a teacher of the deaf and dumb and an amateur painter. A devout Christian and a strict disciplinarian, he inspired in his son a penchant for defying authority, while his interest in painting and sketching in nature influenced Max Ernst to take up painting himself. In 1909 Ernst enrolled in the University of Bonn, studying philosophy, art history, literature, psychology and psychiatry. He visited asylums and became fascinated with the art of the mentally ill patients; he also started painting this year, producing sketches in the garden of the Brühl castle and portraits of his sister and himself. In 1911 Ernst befriended August Macke and joined his Die Rheinischen Expressionisten group of artists, deciding to become an artist. In 1912 he visited the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne, where works by Pablo Picasso and post-Impressionists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin profoundly influenced his approach to art. His own work was exhibited the same year together with that of the Das Junge Rheinland group, at Galerie Feldman in Cologne, and then in several group exhibitions in 1913.

Man Ray 1890-1976 | Surrealist/Cubist painter, sculturist and photographer

Emmanuel Rudnitzky 1890-1976
A New York lavora nel 1908 come disegnatore e grafico.

Marcel Duchamp 1887-1968 | Cubist, Dadaist, Fauvist and Surrealist painter

Marcel Duchamp
Marcel Duchamp the painter and mixed media artist, was associated with Cubism, Dadaism, Fauvism and Surrealism, though he avoided any alliances. Duchamp’s work is characterized by its humor, the variety and unconventionality of its media, and its incessant probing of the boundaries of art. His legacy includes the insight that art can be about ideas instead of worldly things, a revolutionary notion that would resonate with later generations of artists.
Marcel Duchamp was a french artist whose work is most often associated with the Dadaist and Surrealist movements. Considered by some to be one of the most important artists of the 20th century, Duchamp's output influenced the development of post-World War I Western art. He advised modern art collectors, such as Peggy Guggenheim and other prominent figures, thereby helping to shape the tastes of Western art during this period.
Duchamp challenged conventional thought about artistic processes and art marketing, not so much by writing, but through subversive actions such as dubbing a urinal art and naming it Fountain. He produced relatively few artworks, while moving quickly through the avant-garde circles of his time. The creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act.

Mike Worrall 1942 | Surrealist and absurdist english painter

Born 1942 in Matlock Derbyshire, UK Mike Worrall is an english painter and designer, inspired by historical themes. I have been painting since the early 1960's and am almost entirely self taught. I still retain the basic technique and style developed in these early years. I am committed to exploring the subconscious and I like Paul Delvaux and Max Ernst amongst others. I've worked in the feature film industry as an Ideas Artist. I was told by Roman Polanski that a painting of mine he had, gave him the idea of making the film Macbeth. He based the second scene on the painting. I have works in the collections of Victor Lownes, Alan Price of the Animals, Roman Polanski, Nicholas Roeg, Vincent Ward, Alex Proyas and many others.

Michael Cheval 1966 | Surrealist and absurdist painter

Michael Cheval is the world's leading contemporary artist, specializing in absurdist paintings, drawings and portraits. In his definition, absurdity is an inverted side or reality, a reverse side of logic. It does not emerge from the dreams of surrealists, or the work of subconsciousness. It is a game of imagination, where all ties are carefully chosen to construct a literary plot. Any one of Cheval's paintings is a map of his journey into illusion. His work is often metaphorical and requires a sharp eye to decipher the often hidden allusions.

Jean-Paul Avisse 1948 | French surrealist painter

Avisse is a rare and unique artistic genius of unquestionable depth, scope and power. A self taught master of incredible details and universal concepts. Taking over eight weeks to complete each original intricate painting. First time viewers are further amazed to learn that Mr. Avisse creates each original painting by hand, using no computers, photographs or air-brushed techniques. Instead he relies on a much more time honored tradition, his hard learned skills and talents.
Mr. Avisse's images offer us a glimpse into a window of his mind, showing us worlds that we have each perhaps only imagined in fleeting dreams and realities. He vibrantly creates those images with added clarity and details that go far beyond most viewers imaginations and concepts. His art speaks to a specific moment captured in time, his images relating to many of humanities greater issues. His ability to place the viewer into our relationship with the universe, time, space and the environment are constant themes we see repeated in his art. Mr. Avisse adds, "I am very focused on including many important issues into my art. Humanities place in the universe and our struggle with our environment are issues that will be with us for generations. When you view my art and perhaps see a woman's eyes closed you are then witnessing her own dreams and hopes. I try to give you an insight into personal aspirations. We must respect the environment and better try to comprehend our place in the vast universe". He is often asked who his models are but Mr. Avisse creates the people in his art only from his own vivid imagination The amount of details in his paintings constantly amazes even the most knowledgeable and discerning viewers.

André Martins De Barros | Surrealist french painter

"I grew up in Pau, a small town located in the foothills of the Pyrenees. At a very early age I discovered my passion and talent for drawing and painting. Today I paint in mystudio located in the renowned Montmartre district of Paris, just a few blocks from the Moulin Rouge. The conflict of man fighting his fellow man, the role of nature, and the struggle for existence are all constant themes in my imaginative paintings: from simple joys and beauty to troubling scenes of apocalyptic proportions. Yet, in each piece, a sense of optimism and even whimsy is readily apparent. In recent years there has been increased interest in this style, and the ‘Fantastic Realism’ genre has become extremely popular: vibrant images that elevate reality to the realm of the fantastic".
